Approvals process brings Carmichael mine closer

THE Carmichael coal mine project received two major boosts as parliament passed a motion to provide all necessary approvals to the mine and the final landholder compensation deal was agreed to.

In parliament last week, LNP leader Lawrence Springborg moved the motion for the government to "immediately provide all State Government approvals necessary for Adani's Carmichael mine to proceed".

Mr Springborg said he understood the Adani-run project had cleared all environmental and mining hurdles but was still to be approved.

Speaking in parliament, Mackay Labor MP Julianne Gilbert said having the mine go ahead was "critical to the future" of the Mackay area.

Greens candidate for Dawson Jonathon Dykyj said bi-partisan support of the mine's approval lacked vision and was kowtowing to big industry.

"This just shows that state Labor - going against their election promise - have shown their true colours by falling in with the fossil fuel lobby and the LNP," he said.

LNP Hinchinbrook MP Andrew Cripps told the parliament the project had stalled under the current government as it did not truly support the mining sector.

On Wednesday, Adani announced the final landholder compensation agreement had been signed off.

"This agreement, which allows for the inclusion of land within the surface area of the mining lease, represents another important milestone in ensuring the company's mine, rail and port projects proceed, and another step in Adani's plans to build a long-term future with Queensland," Adani said.
