Asbestos a concern in Cannonvale

PANDANUS Drive residents are concerned about the possibility of asbestos in the debris of the former Reefo's site in their street.

Demolition of the building started last week and resident and builder Charlie Bunford said he was concerned about the health of residents if asbestos was actually found on the site.

“I'm extremely worried for everyone that lives here,” he said.

Mr Bunford said about 30 kids lived in one unit block in the street.

“These five and 10-year-old kids are going to die a horrible death,” he said.

Mr Bunford contacted Occupational Health and Safety in Mackay and he said they had taken samples from the site with results expected within two weeks.

Mr Bunford said the matter should be treated very seriously because asbestos was such a harmful product.
