Aussie NBA player set to sign with Celtics

ARON Baynes decision to test the NBA market as an unrestricted free agent appears to have paid off.

The 208cm Aussie centre is on the verge of joining the Boston Celtics after walking away from the $US6.5 million ($A8.6 million) player option he had with the Detroit Pistons.

The Celtics, who topped the Eastern Division last year, have been active in the off-season player market.

Last year's beaten Eastern Conference finalists are set to bring in star Utah forward Gordon Hayward and Piston Marcus Morris, and took Jayson Tatum at no.3 in the draft.

Baynes' signing is yet to be made official, with the Boston side expected to announce the Boomers capture after the pending Hayward deal is done by freeing up space in the salary cap.

Baynes averaged five points and more than four rebounds from 15.5 minutes a game in 2016-17.
