‘Not a typo’: Top 10 cities list baffles everyone
WHEN you think of the world's best cities, what comes to mind?
Paris, New York, Rome? What about Canberra?
No, that's not a typo. The Australian capital came in at number three on Lonely Planet's "Best in Travel" list for 2018. On top of that feat, it is also the only Aussie city to be ranked in the top 10 and the highest an Australian city has ever appeared on the hotly contested list.
Since the list was announced this morning, it sent shockwaves across the country. Unable to deal with the news, Australians seemed to go through the traditional stages of grief.
At first, it started with denial.

When it appeared the list was not in fact fake news, denial quickly turned to anger and confusion. A lot of North Korea comparisons were made.

Bewildered Australians were not happy with Lonely Planet, hurling insults at the largest and most well-known travel guide book publisher in the world.

There were even some conspiracy theories.

Before, finally, we started to accept Canberra's place on the list.

But in true Australian spirit, our capital city is taking it in its stride. Canberra's official tourism organisation, VisitCanberra, has been taking to Twitter to have a bit of a laugh with some of the naysayers.
