Award icing on baker's cake
WHITSUNDAY Baked Creations has been honoured with third place in Australia's Top Five Cake Designers in the 2018 ABIA Awards.
Described as a "one-man band”, Debbie Smith runs her home-based business as baker, decorator, book keeper, administration and receptionist and has a long history of creative baking.
Ms Smith began her journey in the UK 14 years ago when she booked in to do a short course with Royal Icing Master, Eddie Spence who provides wedding cake services to the royal family.
After learning icing and piping techniques, she followed her passion further and enrolled in flower-making courses.
Ms Smith moved to the Whitsundays in 2011 and for the past five years has run her own cake business servicing the Whitsundays and the surrounding islands.
Ms Smith said she was "in disbelief” when she found out that she had placed third in the prestigious awards which require five years of customer ratings above 95 per cent on ABIA.
"You have to get above 95 per cent rating for five years in a row,” she said. "I went into the running for the National Designer of Dreams Award and came third out of five which is awesome.”
Ms Smith was a worthy recipient of the top five placing. Her delectable creations are both delicious and pleasing to the eye.
One of her most recent masterpieces was a five-tier rose wedding cake which she baked for Fairbairn Bakery owners Chris and Kelly Bunyoung's wedding at Coral Sea Resort last Friday.
Whitsunday Baked Creations is located on Parker Rd, Cannonvale. Cake bookings can be made by calling Debbie Smith on 0409323803.
