Badminton players disqualified
AUSTRALIA has returned to the badminton court after four women's teams - including the world champions - were sensationally kicked out of the Olympics.
The eight players form China, South Korea and Indonesia were shown the door after being charged with 'throwing' group stage matches and 'not using one's best efforts to win a match'.
The controversy began when the Chinese duo of Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang seemed to be playing well below their world championship winning best, netting serves and spraying shots wide.
Sensing the situation, their Korean opponents followed suit and the match quickly descended into a farcical situation where neither team wanted to fight for victory.
The suspicion was the two teams were trying to pick an easier path into the finals.
Later, another team from South Korea and Indonesia were also found to be playing for a loss.
The decision to kick all four teams out of the Olympics is a reprieve for the already eliminated Australian team, heading straight into the quarter finals and a match-up with Canada.
