Hemp Embassy President: I’d smoke with ancient gold bong

NIMBIN Hemp Embassy President Michael Balderstone doesn't usually smoke his cannabis through a bong but he would make an exception to 'choof' through 2400-year-old gold bongs recently unearthed in Russia.

The gold water pipes were discovered in a mass grave in the Caucasus Mountains of southern Russia, various media have reported.

"You know I'm not a bong smoker, but in this case I'd make an exception," Mr Balderstone said.

"It sounds fantastic; I'd love to.

"How can we get our hands on it?"

The artifacts were traced back to the Scythians who ruled between 9th century BC and 4th century AD in the area of the Caucasus Mountains.

Russian archeologists said the Scythians were so serious about their smoking that they made their bongs out of solid gold.

Ancient 2,400-year-old gold bongs discovered in Russia

Anton Gass, an archaeologist at the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation in Berlin, told National Geographic that "these are among the finest objects we know from the region. It's a once-in-a-century discovery."

The Greek historian Herodotus was quoted as saying "Scythians used a plant to produce smoke that no Grecian vapour-bath can surpass and that "transported by the vapour, [they] shout aloud."

However, the Scythians were not the only group in history known to smoke marijuana and use drugs.

Evidence of these practices can be traced back to the roots of any ancient culture.

Mr Balderstone said a solid gold 2400-year-old bong would make a great centrepiece for the embassy.

"Out at Nimbin most people steal lighters and take them home but if we had it here they'd be taking home the bong," he said.

He said he wasn't at all suprised at the age of the bongs.

"The last 100 years is the only time in human history that pot hasn't been one of the major herbs being used to enjoy our life," he said.
