Banana-throwing AFL fan may avoid lifetime ban

THE woman who threw a banana at Adelaide Crows star Eddie Betts to make a racially-motivated statement about the Indigenous player has been "indefinitely" barred from games, although the club has stopped short of a lifetime ban.

The Port Adelaide supporter was captured waving her middle finger at Betts before throwing the banana towards him.

It came in the final minutes of the Saturday night match at Adelaide Oval.

Police are yet to receive a complaint about the incident, as of Monday morning.

Meanwhile Port Adelaide chairmain and Sunrise host David Koch spoke out about the actions of the fan, and said the fan was invited to attend the club's Aboriginal cultural awareness program.

Koch said it was an easy decision to ban the woman because other fans had "verified the racial intention".

"Those sort of actions have no place, not only in our club but in the AFL or in the Australian community," he said.

"We quickly moved to ban her indefinitely."

Koch said the club had not given her a lifetime ban because it wanted to change behaviour, instead of merely punishing those who did the wrong thing.

"It can no longer be us against them. We are one mob, we have to work together to educate," he said.

"This lady has the opportunity to change if she takes up the opportunity."

If she attends the program, the club may decide she is again "worthy of membership" although Koch said that would be a decision left to the club's Aboriginal players.

"It is up to our Aboriginal players to decide whether in a yar, two or five that she is worth of membership again," he said.

"That's a good message I think."
