Beach is a shambles

IT'S Airlie Beach's best kept secret, but the local's haunt of Shingley Beach is being neglected by council, according to businesses on the idyllic strip.

Nigel Pemberton of Shingley Beach Resort, said his attempts to contact council over the matter had been unsuccessful.

"We've sent complaints to council, which have not yet been replied to," he said.

"I've also attemped to contact (the division) Councillor Jan Clifford on the matter and I have had no response."

Mr Pemberton says the beach is currently overrun by rocks, which gradually become visible due to water flow and natural erosion.

He said council used to bring in new sand every two years with workers levelling the area and covering the rocks.

"But they haven't done that in three years," he said.

Fellow business owner, Mark Pearson, from Whitsunday Stand-up Paddle, who also operates from Shingley Beach, said the rocks were damaging his equipment.

"We have two locations, and we are at our Shingley Beach location about 60% of the time, due to the shelter the marina here provides from the weather," he explained.

Mayor Jennifer Whitney said council was committed to keeping the region's beaches beautiful.

"We are currently preparing a coastal adaption strategy to inform our expenditure on local beaches and help shape a regular maintenance schedule," she said.

Mayor Whitney also confirmed that an inspection of Shingley Becah was carried out earlier this week by council, stating that the park had been mowed within the last fortnight and the gardens were "presentable".
