Beach-lovers support work to fix erosion

CANNONVALE residents welcomed the first step to the road of recovery for Cannonvale Beach.

The beach has suffered severe erosion since the wet season reached full swing.

Division 2 councillor Ron Petterson said the council would begin work from Monday next week to clear sand from the storm water drain and use the sand to fix the eroded area.

"This is the first step in the project because we can't do anything else until the drain is realigned,” he said.

Cr Petterson said more details on bringing forward the repair and rejuvenation jobs would be revealed in due course.

A group of neighbouring Cannonvale residents met at the beach this week to express their views.

Cannonvale resident Maz McDougall praised Cr Petterson for "batting” for Cannonvale Beach but wanted reassurance the situation would not be repeated.

"We are grateful for the money council is spending to beautify the beach,” she said.

"But we want to know that there will be continuing maintenance to keep this from happening again because this has never happened before.”

Ms McDougall said she would also make the case for a stinger net in the area to give families an incentive to visit.

Residents are encouraged to exercise caution while works are under way.

Council allocated $205,000 for the rejuvenation in the 2016-17 budget.
