Bi-partisan push to ban the plastic bag
ECO Barge founder Libby Edge is sick of seeing marine life choking on plastic bags.
Mrs Edge said now was the time to get serious and safeguard the reef and natural environment from damage caused by plastic bags.
"I saw a turtle first-hand choking on a plastic bag and it makes me think someone once owned that plastic bag and didn't dispose of it correctly,” she said.
"We live in the heart of the reef, we should do everything to protect it, banning the bag is a step in the right direction.”
Whitsunday MP Jason Costigan welcomed the LNP's position to phase out plastic bags should it win government.
This is in line with the Queensland Government's proposal to phase out plastic bags by 2018.
Local ban the bag champion Barb Adamson said public opinion was shifting in support of this decision.
"I think almost everyone will want it to go through, two months ago at the local government conference where every CEO and councillor meets once a year, everyone put their hand up to ban the bag, it's not something they will have arguments with,” she said.
Ms Adamson is launching her boomerang bag in Whitsunday grocery stores after Christmas to encourage environmentally friendly shopping.
Shoppers who forget their green bags can use a boomerang bag and return it to the store for the next shop.
