THE Big Pineapple has officially closed its doors today after being sold for an undisclosed sum to a “local family”.
The Nambour heritage-listed icon has been on the market since July 2009 after owner Graham Hayes placed it in the hands of receivers PPB.
A PPB spokesperson said the sale of the 170-ha site was finalized and the new owners wanted vacant possession.
A couple of staff has been retained to look after the koalas, wombat, dingo, donkey and other animals until “they have found a new home”.
No details on the new owners and their vision for the site have been given, although it was understood their plan was to “renovate” the buildings.
The heritage listing does not apply to the whole site, but will ensure the 15-metre fibreglass pineapple and surrounding buildings remain long into the future.
All future functions, including the popular farmer’s markets, planned at the Pineapple will have to find a new venue.
