Big plans for resort at Laguna

ONCE a jewel in the crown of the region, the Laguna Quays resort has become a sad, overgrown and rundown site since its last closure in early 2012.

Enter new owner Fullshare, who late last year produced plans designed to bring the resort back to its former glory.

Fullshare managing director Yi Yu said the company was planning to redevelop the existing resort, particularly the Turtle Point golf course, hotel and marina.

"At the same time, master planning of a much bigger resort, encompassing the existing one, and building on its attractions is also under way," he said.

Mackay Regional Council has not yet received a development application for any expansion of the resort.

In May this year the State Government announced Laguna Quays had missed out on a gaming licence to build a casino at the resort.

Despite this, a casino still remains in the master plan for the redevelopment.

Mr Yu said he thought there was still an opportunity for Fullshare to gain one of the casino licences.

Much work still needs to be done before the resort can be opened again, with the company not able to give a timeframe on when the golf course or resort may reopen.

"When complete, the new Laguna Quays integrated resort will be one of the biggest in Queensland, incorporating substantially more golfing opportunities, marina berths, hotel rooms, convention and exhibition facilities, entertainment outlets, villas, units, apartments and homes," Mr Yu said.

"As such, it will complement, and work with other existing Whitsunday resorts in helping the entire region realise its true potential as one of Queensland's best tourism areas."

Mr Yu said the previously spectacular golf course was currently being revitalised.

Laguna Quays experienced a range of issues during the tenure of former owner David Marriner.

Whitsundays Marketing and Development Limited chief executive officer Danial Rochford said the redevelopment would be a boost to the wider region.

"There is no doubt investment in tourism infrastructure of a significant nature only helps the tourism industry as a whole," he said.
