BIG4 wins big at Aust awards
BIG 4 Adventure Resort has taken out Bronze in the Caravan and Holiday Parks category at the National Australian Tourism Awards, following their Gold win at the Queensland Tourism Awards.
BIG 4 owner, Greg McKinnon said they were thrilled to have won the award and were proud to represent the Whitsundays.
"We were the only Whitsundays product to attend the awards, hoepfully next year more will join us," he said.
Queensland had some tough competition from New South Wales and Victoria, who dominated the Gold and Silver awards.
"It's a big reward too for the park and all our staff. We won this in 2012 and the extra business it gave us really boosted the park," Mr McKinnon said.
While it's a win for BIG 4, Mr McKinnon said it was also a win for the region.
"This award will put us on the national map. It shows that we're leading the tourism sector," he said.
The hard work isn't all over yet, with the park planning some upgrades soon.
"We still have some land that is free to develop, with room for 100 cabins and 60 powered sites. We also have plans for a waterpark, which will be the only one of its kind in Australia, and we're hoping to have that completed by Christmas this year," Mr McKinnon said.
According to Mr McKinnon, who has owned the business with his wife Naomi for 23 years, diversifying has been the key to it's success.
"Our new conference space caters to a whole new market. Last year we hosted a conference for over 120 guests, who were all staying in accommodation houses all over town. When we're doing well, the whole town is doing well," he said.
