EIGHTEEN months of probation, 40 hours of community service and

a 12- month licence disqualification - that's what one 20-year-old man was handed in Proserpine Magistrates Court on Monday.

Karl Lindsay Altmann from Proserpine could have stopped his off-road motorbike when he saw police conducting RBTs on March 2 around 8.40pm, but instead he sped through the checkpoint, narrowly missing police officers.

Police prosecutor Bernhard Berger said police were conducting the RBT on the corner of Gregory Cannon Valley and Strathdickie Rds when police heard the revving of the motorbike.

On approaching them, police said there were no lights on the bike and tried to intercept by waving their traffic baton but Altmann sped up through them, "ducking and weaving, narrowly missing two police officers".

Officers then returned to Proserpine Police Station where they went to review dash-cam footage. Then while they were there, they heard the revving of the motorbike again. Atlmann was finally located behind O'Duinn's Irish Pub with his bike nearby. Altmann became argumentative and confrontational and there was a minor scuffle before he was arrested.

Things only got worse from there for Altmann, as checks revealed he did not hold a current licence after it was suspended previously and not renewed. He had also never held a motorbike licence, was not wearing a helmet and the vehicle was unregistered and uninsured.

He then also blew 0.094.

The court heard Altmann had had problems with alcohol and that he "panicked" when he saw police.

Magistrate Simon Young said Altmann had driven "callously" through the road check and had "endangered the lives of officers".
