Bird swoops back into frame for Origin

RUGBY LEAGUE: Gold Coast forward Greg Bird has succeeded in having a dangerous throw charge downgraded by the NRL judiciary and will now miss just two clubs games and just one State of Origin.

Bird's visit to the judiciary to contest a grade three charge could have had dire consequences had the judiciary dismissed his appeal with his four week suspension being extended to six weeks, ruling him out of all three interstate games.

"It would have been heartbreaking to miss the entire series," said the rugged Titans forward outside the NRL's Sydney headquarters last night.

He said players were totally confused about gradings and lifting tackles and felt the charge he was hit with was too harsh. "Players are confused, I can straight away say that," said Bird who has played 14 Origins for NSW.

"You got a big man coming at you, you can't shoulder charge, you can't dive in below the knees and you can't bend your back and drive so it's going to be interesting to see where it goes from here."

The three man panel of former player Chris McKenna, Don McKinnon and Royce Simmons heard evidence that Bird had not placed his hand between South Sydney winger Bryce Goodwin's legs and the charge was too high.

In other league news Zane Tetevano has had his contract terminated by the Newcastle Knights effective immediately after his recent disciplinary discretions which included smashing a taxi windscreen on May 28.
