Blackcurrant Island all-tide boat ramp 'not feasible'
A CONTROVERSIAL plan to build an all-tide boat ramp on Blackcurrant Island came to a stop at this week's council meeting.
In a meeting held in Bowen, Whitsunday councillors unanimously deemed the project too expensive to be considered viable, based on infrastructure costs, as well as environmental concerns.
The decision comes after numerous feasibility studies and costings that has cost council in excess of $100,000 already.
Studies that Mayor Andrew Willcox said were necessary to conduct to ensure a prudent decision could be made on the outcome of the project."What I want to do today is clearly articulate council's position on this project this so we can put to bed all the stories,” Cr Willcox said.
"I've supported the process up to date,” Mayor Andrew Willcox told the meeting.
"But clearly now it's not viable. I won't be supporting this any further on the basis of cost. The size of the infrastructure is not in the amenity of this pristine area, and there are environmental concerns over that.”

The decision follows months of debate from various members of the community between those who support and oppose the ramp, as well as speculation over whether council had done its due diligence with its assessment of the site.
Making a point to address accusations, Director of Engineering Jason Raiteri said such claims were unfounded.
"That is false. I've had discussions with GHD engineers recently. During the course of the P90 studies they visited the site twice, to provide criteria analysis. In addition to the GHD engineers all my staff have been there, and I've walked the island personally,” he said.
Mr Raiteri said any infrastructure plan, whether that be building a causeway or a bridge to access the ramp, would have cost council in excess of $10 million once parking and toilet facilities were factored in. "That would basically be our entire roads and drainage budget through an entire 12 month period,” he said.
Cr Willcox said he remained committed to finding an affordable solution for a new and safe boat ramp in the Gloucester area.
