Blackout can’t stop WFC
FOOTBALL: Not even two blackouts could stop the Whitsunday Football Club's premier men's winning run this season.
WFC is undefeated in the Mackay Premier League in 2015 and extended its record to six wins from seven matches on Saturday night at the Whitsunday Sportspark.
The team was leading 1-0 against City Brothers before the second blackout occurred roughly 10 minutes from full time.
As a result, the match was called off early and WFC was awarded the three competition points.
"It was a scrappy first half and our boys got up but we missed another penalty," WFC football manager Anthony Nobilia said.
"We made it difficult for ourselves. The wind and the pitch weren't great but those conditions were the same for both teams.
"We did enough to win but it was another frustrating game to watch... we know we can play better."
Although WFC didn't hit top gear, Nobilia admitted it was pleasing that the team can still get the job done without playing to its potential.
"We're not putting it together but if you're playing badly and still against a good side, we'll take that," he said.
"We beat Mackay Crusaders and we weren't the better team but we won the game. We usually are the better team but for once, we weren't but we still got the points."
In other news, the reserves suffered a shock loss to the fifth placed City Brothers. Although WFC's reserves lead the competition, City Brothers took a 2-1 win at the Whitsunday Sportspark on Saturday afternoon.
This weekend WFC's premier men will travel to Townsville for their second North Queensland Club Challenge fixture of the season. WFC will play Townsville Brothers on Saturday night and Nobilia isn't sure what to expect.
"We have to be prepared. That region is very strong and any team that represents Townsville will be strong," he said.
"We love going up there and it's a good excuse to get away and have a bonding session with the boys. It draws us closer as a club and we're excited by it."
MCL and reserves teams will play at the Whitsunday Sportspark on Sunday.
