Boat ramp tender

WHITSUNDAY fisherman Bob Spees can see light at the end of a five-year fight for a safer Cannonvale boat ramp.

A passionate campaigner, spurred on by the multitude of near-miss accidents he has heard about in his fishing tackle shop, Mr Spees said he was overjoyed to hear Council had finally resolved to call for tenders to upgrade the ramp.

"I just reckon it's fantastic, because even recently there have still been accidents down there and the whole thing just couldn't come soon enough," he said.

Whitsunday mayor Jennifer Whitney said subject to receiving the necessary State Government funding and approvals, Council hoped to start the project in late August or early September and have it finished by the end of 2015. The upgrade will include widening the ramp and constructing a breakwater and pontoon.
