Bob’s tips for holiday anglers
LOCAL fishing guru Bob Spees has a bunch of tips for kids looking to wet a line these school holidays.
Just off the Cannonvale Beach near the stinger net, Mr Spees said there had been whiting and flathead taking baits of peeled prawns and beach worms.
Also with the kids in mind, try Wilsons Beach and Conway on a rising tide for whiting and Hydeaway Bay has been fishing well for whiting and flathead.
Remember to always keep your squid jig handy as there are quite a lot of them around at the moment.
Mr Spees said Shute Harbour had been yielding big queen fish and school mackerel in the early morning and late afternoon.
They can be caught on live herring, poppers and stick bait.
Land-based angers have been landing some nice sized grunter off the Abell Point Marina using garfish fillets and peeled prawns.
Those looking to get the boat in the water this weekend would be well advised to head to Unsafe Passage and try landing a Spanish mackerel.
Mr Spees said there were a lot of bait fish sitting in the passage that the mackerel had been feeding on.
If you are looking at targeting bottom feeders there have been reports of good sized trout being caught around the fringing reefs using pilchards and soft plastics.
In the Proserpine River around the oyster and muscle bed around 300 metres from the boat ramp, big grunter in numbers are being landed. Mr Spees said they were being caught on pilchards and garfish fillets.
Also in the Proserpine area at the Peter Faust Dam some nice barramundi are being caught at the edge of the reed beds using trolling lures.
