Boombot moves in to St Catherine's
CHILDREN at St Catherine's Catholic College have been having fun all week participating in Science Week.
Assistant principal Samantha Hinton said this year's theme drones, droids and robots captured the kid's collective imagination.
"The children are thoroughly enjoying their time with the robots and programming, she said.
"The library lunchtime activities include programming the BeeBots and Probots using the iPad apps BeeBot and Tynker. And remote control car races which will be videoed by a student using a drone."
One student to bring a drone along to class on Friday was George Bell.
"I wanted to record the class, so that the school would have some footage of the cars racing around," he said.
George said he didn't want to be a scientist when he grew up but thought drones were very interesting.
"I think it's amazing that they can make something that can fly up and record what's around it."
Ms Hinton said the students have also viewed some of the ABC Splash programs with amazing robots in action and had engaged in discussions about robots in the future.
"Our activities have centred on introducing the students to devices and programs," she said.
"The idea of real-world applications of autonomous technologies is something we have mapped into our curriculum programs from Prep up.
"The students investigate robotics and technologies in areas including at home, agriculture, mining, manufacturing, medicine and space and deep ocean exploration."
Also this week, each campus has been introduced to their own campus robot.
On Mercy campus, Boombot has moved in.
He visited all of the classes and had loads of energy and has been a source of great entertainment.
Students have been constructing him and will use an app to control and interact with their robot mascot.
