Bowen beautician’s natural therapies a winning combination
GIVING grandmothers foot rubs was one of the first ways Kerrie Hammond explored beauty therapy, long before she even realised it was a career.
Mrs Hammond has now been in the profession for 27 years and has just been voted the best beautician in the Whitsundays by readers.
The Bowen beauty therapist, who owns Indulgence Natural Beauty Clinic, remembers offering her own grandmother, and her friends' grandmas, foot rubs when she was young.
She also fostered a great fondness for make-up to help boost self-esteem, however did not realise she could turn those interests into a job.
Mrs Hammond said she tried three different degrees before "falling into" beauty therapy while she was working as a "tea and tidy" at a clinic while studying.
"I decided I didn't need a degree to be happy so beauty therapy was for me," she said.
Aside from working in the industry, she has also taught beauty therapy at TAFE and private beauty schools.
Twenty-one years ago she moved back to her hometown of Bowen from Townsville to run Indulgence Natural Beauty Clinic.
Mrs Hammond now specialises in facials, pedicures, waxing and make-up, an area her daughter Emily Hart also helps her out with.
She said she preferred "old-school", natural methods, rather than mechanical solutions such as laser treatments.
"I didn't like being hurt myself," she said.
"Sometimes I didn't feel the pain was worth the gain.
"I can actually help the cause and effect."
But if clients want any treatment she does not offer, she is happy to refer them to a local clinic that can provide the service.
"We've got a really nice little network in Bowen," she said.
Mrs Hammond considers it a "nice gift" to be able to help boost the confidence of clients who walk through her door and also offers a listening ear and safe space for them to open up when needed.
"I know where a lot of them have been at, so even if it's a pedicure or eyebrow wax, they feel better," she said.
This ethos has no doubt helped her build up the loyal clientele that keeps her very busy today.
Mrs Hammond said being voted the best beautician in the Whitsundays was "unbelievable".
"Considering I have a close clientele, it's just beautiful," she said.
