Bowen sweeps inter-town games

CRICKET: The 2015-16 inter-town junior cricket series between Proserpine and Bowen began on Sunday.

Three Proserpine teams headed north to play their Bowen rivals in the under-10s, 12s and 16s. The under-16s were allocated 35 overs a side for their one-day game, with the Proserpine Bulldogs electing to bowl first.

Noel Waipepe (2/10) and Jayden Lane (3/17) struck early, reducing Bowen to 3/23 before the middle order regathered through Tom Butwell (22) and Campbell Cross (18).

The 55-run partnership for the fourth wicket put Bowen right back in the game before Theo Brown (2/1) and Cooper Lane (2/11) rushed through the lower order.

Bowen finished with 137 after the last wicket put on 29.

The 16s had early setbacks in their chase, losing the top order cheaply and leaving the team reeling at 3/40.

However a fine middle order resurgence led by Matthew Hansen (25) and Noel Waipepe (23) took the score to 101 and suddenly the Bulldogs were back in the game.

Jayden Abbott (3/12) and Campbell Cross (3/28) changed the game again with a series of wickets as Proserpine fell seven runs short.

Elsewhere the under-12s match was also close, as they played a twenty20 game with each player allocated a maximum of 20 balls to score their runs.

The Bowen team batted first and scored 6/97 - led by Dan Wilson (13), Josh Monsour (13) and Viv Tully (12).

Proserpine's best bowlers included Ash Sinnott (1/10), Jay O'Loughlin (1/6) and Keira Smith (1/7).

In reply Proserpine fell 10 runs short. Their batsmen mustered 87 thanks to Corey Dwyer (13), Jay O'Loughlin (6) and Jack Pini (8).

Meanwhile the under-10s also lost to their Bowen counterparts, falling by six runs.

Batting first, Bowen compiled 5/114 from their 30 overs, led by Nick Stark (15) and Alex Homewood (10).

The wickets fell for Proserpine bowlers Max Watson (2/5), Calen Knight (1/4) and Callum Edmondson (1/8).

In reply the Bulldogs came close thanks to enterprising knocks from Max and Ted Watson while Ivan Frederickson (15) and Kohan Mau (5) also chipped in.

Proserpine finished on 5/108 - six runs short of their required total.
