Boy trains with an Ironman superstar

CALLAM Ogilvie-Alcock did not spend his weekend like most other 12-year-old boys.

He received the Hamilton Island Creating Extraordinary Award for his outstanding sporting and academic achievements at St Catherine's Catholic College.

For his prize, Callam had chosen a personal training session with dual Olympian and seven-time Ironman Champion Ky Hurst on Hamilton Island.

His family also reaped the benefits with two nights' accommodation on the island.

Callam is an avid sportsman, representing St Catherine's at the Queensland Titles in tennis and the Queensland triathlon titles for two years now.

Olympian Ky Hurst said he was very impressed with Callam's efforts on Saturday.

"I trained just as hard as he did when I was a kid. It was great to train with Callam and impart some of my tips and techniques and things I wish I had done when I was young," he said. "I have no doubt that Callam will continue to excel on the sports field and in his academic pursuits."

Callam said it wasn't every day you got to meet and train with an Australian Ironman.

"Ky had some really great advice on what he has learned as an Olympic champion and competing at Ironman events," he said.

Local students from the Whitsundays are being rewarded with money-can't-buy experiences, thanks to a new award program developed by Hamilton Island.

"The Hamilton Island Creating Extraordinary Awards are part of the island's commitment to the local Whitsunday and Proserpine communities. As one of the region's biggest employers, Hamilton Island is constantly on the lookout for ways we can give back to local schools, community groups and sporting organisations," Hamilton Island CEO Glenn Bourke said.

Callam was the second recipient of the award with several more available and offering extraordinary experiences such as personal cooking lessons, photography workshops and a spectator spot at Audi Hamilton Island Race Week.
