Brahmans’ win puts team at top

RUGBY LEAGUE: The Whitsunday Brahmans sent a warning to their title rivals on Sunday with a 28-14 win over Souths Sharks.

The A-grade Brahmans took to the park missing four key players due to injury but looked comfortable throughout the match. Coach James Webb congratulated A-grade debutant Matt Kennedy on a successful debut and said he was a player who we were sure to see more of in the coming years. Prop Kade Breen took out Players' Player honours in a standout game up front.

The Brahmans took an 18-10 lead into half-time courtesy of a dominant start and tries to prop Breen, former QLD Cup and Italian international Sam Gardel and winger Jhun Cortez.

Webb called for his players to maintain their intensity and continue their dominance into the second half and it took only eight minutes for the Brahmans to cross through lock Ivan Petelo while under-18 player Kai O'Donnell crossed for the Brahmans' final try.

The Powered by Murphy reserve grade suffered a big loss against a strong Souths side on Sunday, 40-10.

The Brahmans were starved of possession in the opening half resulting in a tired defensive line and a 22-0 half-time deficit.

Although they came out strong in the second half, tries to Adam Bugeja and Matt Lade weren't enough.

Hard running and strong defence saw prop Doug Davy claim Man of the Match honours while hooker Zach Read and winger Chris Pennaertz also had standout matches.

The fifth placed NQ Glass & Glazing U18 Brahmans took on the fourth-placed Sharks but a poor start proved too big to overcome as they lost 30-10.

Missing key players, the Brahmans lacked intensity and poor defensive reads had them 22-0 down 15 minutes into the game.
