Lightning to face acid test first up

BREAKING: NETBALL: Talk about a tough first day on the job.

Sunshine Coast Lightning will take on Queensland Firebirds on February 18 at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in what will be the club's first-ever game in the national competition.

The Firebirds won three grand finals in the old ANZ Championship and boast Romelda Aiken, Gretel Tippett, Caitlyn Nevins among their ranks.

The Lightning have recruited well and will be eager to take a win in the first Queensland derby with the likes of Geva Mentor, Laura Langman, Caitlin Bassett and Stephanie Wood to line up in Lightning colours.

Netball Australia CEO Kate Palmer said the match up was "incredibly exciting".

"While the Firebirds have the pedigree as back-to-back premiers, there is no doubt that Sunshine Coast Lightning have recruited impressively, with a mixture of international and local talent," Palmer said.

"As the first professional sports team on the Sunshine Coast, we anticipate the Lightning will quickly attract fans' attention.

"The blockbuster opening round of the national netball league, featuring three local derbies, will set the tone for the season."

Lightning coach Noeline Taurua will be tasked with trying to orchestrate what would be a massive win for the local ladies.

The Daily is chasing her thoughts on the match up today after the first round of fixtures was announced.
