Timpanist in YouTube Orchestra

THE international exposure Brent Miller is gaining from his invitation to play in the YouTube Symphony Orchestra is set to benefit his career for years.

The former Toowoomba State High School student was one of four Australians and the only timpanist to be accepted into the international orchestra.

He will join musicians from 33 countries in March for a week of practice that will culminate in a performance at the Sydney Opera House.

Mr Miller, 21, said he had had more than 6000 views on his personal YouTube channel in just two days after his name was announced in the list of chosen musicians.

“Getting this kind of exposure is invaluable,” Mr Miller said.

“This is worldwide attention.

“It's a very daunting but very exciting career prospect.”

His online audition video was voted on by those who saw it on YouTube before a judging panel of members from nine professional orchestras around the world made a final decision on his inclusion.

“I'm thrilled to be selected as the timpanist.

“Usually there is only one timpanist in an orchestra, which makes chances to perform at a high level very limited.”

The Opera House performance will be streamed live on YouTube to the world.

“It is going to be a fantastic experience for me to perform with talented musicians from around the world.

“I would really like to thank everyone who voted for me.”

Mr Miller will continue his Bachelor of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium this year after spending the past year as principal timpanist for Orchestra Victoria.

He is also set to do some work with the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra in May.
