Bright new beginning for Gold Coast Big Day Out

THOUSANDS of punters are streaming into the new home of the Gold Coast Big Day Out as the festival gets underway today.

There was a lengthy queue outside Metricon Stadium and the Carrara Parklands this morning but it moved steadily as keen music-lovers got in early to soak up the sun and party vibes.

More than 35,000 tickets had been sold in the lead-up to the event, with tickets still available for purchase at the box office today.

Today is a family affair for the Moog-Roberts family from Strathpine on the north side of Brisbane.

Mum Lacee and dad Adam bought the family tickets for Christmas.

It's the first ever Big Day Out for all of the family except Mr Roberts, who hasn't been to the festival since the 1999 event headlined by Blink 182.

Tonight Metricon Stadium, home of the Gold Coast Suns AFL team, will play host to lengthy sets by international headliners Arcade Fire and Pearl Jam.

Snoop Dogg (aka Snoop Lion) will play his reggae set at the Red Stage.
