Brittany dreams further

ON RETURNING to Australia after three months in Kenya, 22-year-old Brittany Pratt's life had changed forever.

She spent three months last year teaching English at the Body of Christ Children's Centre in Limuru, Kenya.

"I balled my eyes out on my way to the airport (to come home). I couldn't just leave there, come home and leave it at that," she said.

Ms Pratt doesn't have glamorous, overstated goals - she just wants to sponsor an orphanage.

When she returned to Australia, she saw her entire world differently.

"People can be so materialistic and they are sad when they have everything," she said.

Ms Pratt set herself a goal to raise $3000 in three months to send back to the orphanage, and was able to do so from donation tins at Phoenix Bar where she works and through a fundraising website she also set up.

Ms Pratt would now like to re-start the campaign with a new goal of $10,000.

"$1000 of that money has lasted six months - it's amazing what you can do and how easy it is to help," she said.

She also strives to educate westerners on volunteering in third-world countries.

"I think everyone should give volunteering a go. It is so good for the soul, and you learn and grow so much from it. It taught me that if you have a roof over your head, food on your table and a healthy family, you are a lot richer than you think. The people I met over in Kenya are hands down the richest people I know."
