Brough enters the fray

ASPIRING Coast politician Mal Brough has used a national TV program to demand the Gillard Government scrutinise newly independent Speaker Peter Slipper.

Mr Brough was one of two panellists on Channel 10's Bolt Report yesterday morning, where he was quizzed on gay marriage and former LNP colleague Mr Slipper.

The former Howard minister has made no secret of his desire to take the seat of Fisher, even before Mr Slipper defected from the party.

Mr Brough was asked, in regards to Prime Minister Julia Gillard, "What's the question you think she is running away from in regards to Peter Slipper?"

"What I would be saying to Julia Gillard is: You have put this man forward as your man," Mr Brough said.

"More than 2500 voters have asked the parliament to check his credibility because they do not have faith in him."

Mr Brough is referring to a petition put together by the Sunshine Coast Daily and tabled in parliament by Mr Slipper's LNP sparring partner and member for Fairfax Alex Somlyay.

The petition demands an audit of Mr Slipper's notorious expense accounts and that new expense guidelines be put in place.

For now, it is in the hands of Special Minister of State Gary Gray.

ALP campaign advisor Bruce Hawker - the second panellist on the show - interrupted Mr Brough, saying it was convenient to forget Mr Slipper was a Coalition man for more than two decades.

"Every election since 1984 he has been your man," Mr Hawker said.

"Suddenly he's a Labor's man.

"If you have big issues with him, you have had since 1984 to come out and talk about them.

"When do we hear about them? When he becomes an independent."

Mr Brough continued, calling for the Labor Government to take action against the Member for Fisher.

"You have in the parliament right now, a petition from almost 3000 voters on the Sunshine Coast who don't have any faith in Mr Slipper.

"All they are asking is, Julia Gillard, will you please just fully audit his expenses?

"Is that too much to ask to make sure the first officer of the parliament is above reproach?"

Mr Slipper failed to respond to interview requests before deadline yesterday.
