Bucket list ticked for cane comp winner

IT WAS after an incident where he received severe burns that Anthony "Tony" Jeppeson decided winning best exhibitor at the cane competition of Show Whitsunday was something he had to do.

Today he ticked the achievement off his list as took the award by two points.

"It was on my bucket list," he said.

"I've been entering for 20 years (but) I haven't won the exhibitor of the year so it's pretty cool."

On his way to claiming the top prize, Mr Jeppeson also won five other categories including champion stool.

Mr Jeppeson has been farming his entire life at his family's fifth generation property at Bloomsbury.

"I grew up on the farm and never moved," he said.

"Our family got there in 1921 so we're coming up to our 100th anniversary."

While he acknowledged rain has been an issue at times, he also said they were going through a good season at present.

"We've got a pretty good crop at home now," he said.

"Through the whole district we did great."

Mr Jeppeson also said he hoped the current delay with a start to the 2016 crush would be cleared up as soon as possible.

"Hopefully we'll start at the end of next week and we have a good safe crush and get it all up again," he said.

"We want to get into it pretty quick.

"There's good pricing out there and we can't access it.

"The district needs it (and) as a community we need a good price and a good crop."

When asked what his secret to growing prize sugarcane was, Mr Jeppeson's answer was simple.

"You grow the best sugarcane you can," he said.
