Storm over Jarratt's marina support

MEMBER for Whitsunday Jan Jarratt’s support for a new marina in the World Heritage Area of Shute Harbour has been criticised by Greens candidate for Dawson Jonathon Dykyj.

“Ms Jarratt claims that it will protect boats from cyclones. Wouldn’t it be better for her and her government to focus on delivering the cyclone shelters promised by the Beattie government?” Mr Dykyj said.

“Yes, it is sad to see boats getting damaged but adequate protection for people must come first. We have to get our priorities in order here.

“In recent times we have been lucky with (cyclones) Hamish and Ului. They could have been much worse for us. What will it take for this Labor Government to come good on it’s promise?

“It would appear that the real motivation for the destruction of this pristine World Heritage Area is for a blatant land grab that will only benefit some Labor mates.

“There are some serious questions that need answering regarding the lease agreement.

“The Greens are not anti-development; we are pro appropriate and sustainable development, which this proposed marina is certainly not.”
