Building demolished at Abell Point

CHANGES are continuing to sweep through the Abell Point Marina were a building that housed the north village office for more than two decades was demolished last month.

Marina owner Paul Darrouzet said the building, which was also home to charter companies and an amenities block, "basically impeded the village atmosphere we want to create".

"The vision we've got is that the north village becomes a beautiful part of tropical North Queensland," he said.

"And at the moment it's [been] more like an industrial hub."

Mr Darrouzet said the area where the building previously stood would now be streetscaped and landscaped with six large umbrellas installed, creating a shady spot where visitors to the marina could enjoy a picnic and soak up the atmosphere.

"At Hamo people go to the bakery or buy some fish and chips and sit outside - and it's a beautiful place to visit," he said.

"That's what we're doing here - we just want to open the place up."

Mr Darrouzet said the remaining buildings would all receive a facelift with a hard white paint finish and contrasting trim.

"But no more demolition," he said.

The marina's renovations took a break over Christmas but are expected to resume in January.
