Business to rescue of junior lifeguards

BUSINESSES have rallied in support of the Whitsunday Coast Life Saving Club's junior members after crucial equipment was accidentally discarded.

A 75 metre rope and floats used as part of the junior program were inadvertently disposed of over Christmas.

Concerned mother Kym Hepburn, whose two children are part of the program, said she had been keen to do something about it.

"When I became aware of all this I decided to put a call out on my personal Facebook page to ask local businesses if they would put a donation tin on their counters,” she said. "Much to my utter amazement, I had a fantastic response. I had initially made 10 tins up but had to double that by the afternoon to 20 tins.

"Not only did we get this fabulous response, three local businesses donated to the club for immediate purchase of the equipment needed.”

Club manager Calum Docherty said the support was a boost for the not-for-profit organisation which is relying on members to cover the fuel costs for the club's inflatable rescue boat.

The Whitsunday Coast LSC has the largest junior lifeguards program in Queensland with 200 children taking part.
