Cairns ironwoman dies in hospital after two days in coma

A WOMAN who was pulled unconscious from the water during the Cairns Ironman has died in hospital.

Mother-of-two Erica Atkins was doing a 1.9 kilometre swim as part of the 70.3 Carins Ironman team event when lifesavers pulled her from the water just 20 metres from the shoreline.

Once ashore, she was to hand over to her husband Mark to complete the cycle leg of the event.

A Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) spokesman on Sunday said Ms Atkins suffered a cardiac arrest in the water.

After two days in an induced coma, the 43-year-old was pronounced dead at the Cairns Hospital this morning.
