Cane train off the rails

A CRACKED rail along Strathdickie Road is believed to have been the cause of a cane train derailment last Wednesday night.

Proserpine cane supply manager, Ron Worth, said an outbound Proserpine Mill locomotive, hauling empty cane bins, tipped on to its side after derailing at about 7.40pm.

The incident occurred opposite Camille Drive, Strathdickie, leaving the driver shaken up.

Construction workers were called to the scene to mend the track and salvage the train.

They described the train derailment as a "slow roll over" which resulted in the driver receiving minor injuries, including bruises to his chest and arms.

Mr Worth said he was taken to Proserpine Hospital as a precaution.

Police also attended the scene and an investigation into the incident is under way.

Mr Worth said early investigations suggested a rail broke under the locomotive while it was negotiating a curve.

A crane was used to retrieve the locomotive on Thursday morning and the track was repaired and re-opened to cane trains on Thursday afternoon.

The incident had no impact on crushing operations.
