Canegrowers want steady sugar board
QUEENSLAND Sugar Limited (QSL) director Guy Cowan has been named as incoming chairman to the chairmanship of sugar marketer QSL.
With the departure of previous chairman Mike Carroll, Canegrowers welcomed the new chairman but said they would have liked to have seen continuity with the board of QSL.
The two independent directors' terms, those of previous chairman Mike Carroll and Guy Cowan, were up for consideration as of December 31, 2014.
QSL's Board Selection Committee, comprising two grower and two mill representatives, were unable to reach consensus on Mike Carroll's reappointment and, as a result, his term concluded.
Mr Cowan was appointed to the QSL for a further three-year term and assumed the chairmanship on January 1.
Canegrowers CEO Brendan Stewart said the peak group for sugarcane growers would have been comfortable with the reappointment of Mike Carroll as chair.
He said continuity and tenure were important factors in providing certainty for the industry.
"The decision not to renew Mike Carroll's term, which concluded on December 31, 2014, is just an extra layer of uncertainty in already uncertain times," he said.
"It is without doubt that the industry has benefited greatly from his strong leadership during one of the most tumultuous times for the future of the Australian industry's marketing arrangements.
"Our sincere thanks goes to Mr Carroll, who has navigated some pretty murky waters on behalf of the Australian sugarcane industry."
Mr Cowan has been a director with QSL since 2009.
In a statement from QLS, Mr Cowan paid tribute to Mr Carroll, saying his stewardship, leadership and insights during his term, and particularly during the past 12 months, were highly valued and appreciated.
