Car accident on Shute Harbour Rd blocks west bound traffic

BREAKING

AT about 12pm in driving rain the west bound lane of Shute Harbour Road became closed to traffic.

Eyewitnesses report hearing a crash after a car slowed to turn into Macarthur Drive, a red Daihatsu Charade following failed to avoid the slowing vehicle in front and has crashed into the back of it.

Nearby operator of Whitsunday Dive Adventures John Bissell was at the scene.

"We heard a crash and came over with a first aid kit to see if we could do anything," he said.

A nurse in a passing car offered assistance to an elderly male occupant of the trailing car before Queensland Ambulance Service personnel applied a neck brace and prepared him for transport to hospital.

Police and an RACQ unit worked to clear the road of broken glass and the smashed car was towed off the road using a rope.
