CASH KILLER: Sanghyun Hwang killed a man for $10K

A SUPREME court justice told a convicted murderer he brought shame on himself and his family as he sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Justice Martin Daubney made the comment after hearing from the brother of former Bundaberg fruit picker Min Tae Kim about the heartache his family had suffered since the murder on December 16, 2013.

A Brisbane Supreme Court jury took about an hour to find Sanghyun Hwang guilty of murder. Hwang had already pleaded guilty to interfering with Mr Kim's body but maintained he did not intend to kill the man.

"It is said in some places that life is cheap," Justice Daubney said.

"In this case, we know what Mr Kim's life was worth to you. It was worth about $10,000.

"That was the amount you planned to steal from him when you lured him from the house in Algester.

"That was the amount you took from his body after you had choked him to death."

Mr Kim's brother, racked with sobbing, told the court he spent many nights without sleep since the murder and his mother's health had suffered.

He said Min Tae was an aspiring musician and guitarist whose dreams were cut short.

Mr Kim posted an online ad looking for someone to exchange about $10,000 in Australian dollars for the equivalent in South Korean won before he returned home.

Hwang choked Mr Kim to death, took the money and then stripped Mr Kim naked before burying him in a shallow grave.- ARM NEWSDESK
