Category C assistance making a difference

JUST about every Proserpine business took a hit from Cyclone Debbie - and Whitsunday Bakery was no different.

But while there is uncertainty over whether a small number of shops might re-open, the bakery is back on its feet and business is thriving once again.

Owner Lorella Cassels met with Deputy Premier Jackie Trad today to talk about how Category C funding has benefited her two months on.

"We lost all of our stock and had to buy everything all over again,” she said.

"The assistance we got has really helped and things are returning back to normal.”

Ms Cassels said it was reassuring to see government representatives engaging with people and businesses in Proserpine.

Deputy Premier Jackie Trad said the Queensland Government recognised a need to give local business a hand up.

"We all know the Whitsundays bore the brunt of Severe Tropical Cyclone Debbie and all industries in the area felt the impact, especially small businesses," she said.

"Across the region, approximately 98 per cent of small businesses surveyed said they were affected by the event,” she said.

Approved small businesses, not for profit organisations and primary producers can apply for a Category C grant of up to $25,000.
