Celebrating New Year’s with a bang

RING in the new year with a bang by attending the Airlie Beach New Year's Eve fireworks display, organised by the Reef Festival committee.

Relying on funds donated by generous sponsors, the annual event is shaping up to be bigger and better than last year, as major sponsor Whitsunday Transit have put a generous sum towards the family fireworks display at 9pm.

"Last year there was talk of only having the midnight fireworks," Whitsunday Transit owner Colin Crossley said.

"So we stepped in and sponsored the 9pm display (and) we're doing the same thing again this year.

"Depending on how Airlie Beach goes next year, we're hoping that people will be able to fund the fireworks themselves, and that way it's more special as they own it."

Mr Crossley said the 9pm fireworks were important, "as there are sometimes thousands of kids on the beach ready to watch the fireworks".

"Fireworks on New Years Eve is universal, it's a must have."

Whitsunday Regional Council have also come on board as sponsors, citing the event as an important opportunity for the community to come together and welcome in the new year.

"Council has a long-standing tradition of supporting the New Year's Eve fireworks in both Airlie Beach and Bowen," Mayor Jennifer Whitney said.

"(And) we're very pleased to be able to play a part in helping the local community celebrate the year we've had and usher in 2016."

However, Reef Festival Comittee chairwoman Margie Murphy said more sponsors were still needed.

"To ensure the fireworks spectacle is better than ever, we do need some further financial assistance. We're calling on local businesses and accommodation houses that have prime firework viewing spots, to make a donation," she said. Ms Murphy said the fireworks were a beneift to all, including locals and visitors who made a special trips to the Whitsundays over the Christmas and New Year period.

"And it's a free event for the whole community," she said. "We encourage people to bring a blanket to sit on, grab a bite to eat along the foreshore or bring your own picnic."
