Changes to main street traffic next week

THE Whitsunday Reef Festival is only a week away and local residents are being reminded that there will be changes to traffic on the Airlie Beach main street.

From midnight next Wednesday, the street will turn one-way, while the Beach Music stage is set up.

People travelling from Cannonvale towards Shute Harbour will be able to drive down the street but those travelling in the opposite direction will be asked to follow Waterson Way.

At 3pm next Friday, August 1, the street will be totally closed to traffic to allow the street party to go ahead.

It will re-open as one-way only at midnight and close again at 3pm on Saturday for the street parade and second street party that night.

At midnight on Saturday, August 2, the street will again open one-way, returning to the normal two-lane situation at 6pm on Sunday, after the stage has been packed down. The central lagoon carpark will be closed from midnight on Thursday, July 31 until 6pm on Sunday, August 3 to accommodate carnival rides.

Alternative bus stops will be in place over the weekend at the top end of Waterson Way.

With extra buses provided on the Friday and Saturday nights, festival-goers are being encouraged to make use of public transport.
