Characters come alive at Storytime

CHILDREN around Australia were all ears at 11am yesterday for the National Simultaneous Storytime event.

In conjunction with Library and Information week, the annual event is held by the Australian Library and Information Association to encourage more young Australians to read books.

Each year, at the same time, a picture book written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in places such as libraries, schools, pre-schools and child care centres all around the country.

This year, children were read 'I Got This Hat', written by Jol and Kate Temple and illustrated by Jon Foye, and here in the Whitsundays, students from Whitsunday Christian College were highly entertained.

Kieran McCarthy, who also performed a free concert for the children, joined in on the story-telling by putting a different hat on his head for every page read out.

Cannonvale Library Team Leader Kerry Dorman said the kids absolutely loved it.

"The kids were singing, dancing, clapping and really getting involved," she said.

"They reacted a lot to the book being read."
