Check your council rates category

HAVING moved from interstate many years ago and purchasing a property in the Whitsundays, we thought that our settlement documentation a that highlighted our property was " principle place of residence" that council would apply the correct rates.

This was not the case as council ignore any legal documentation at time of settlement relating to occupational status of your house, and will automatically default you to a higher rates category unless you fill in a council specific form relating to an owner occupier status.

As Whitsunday council do not believe that a person who purchases a home and states it's a "principle place of residence" is not likely to be an owner occupier.

Therefore they default you to an investment like category where you will be charged a higher rates calculation.

So do yourself a favour, if you are an owner occupier of your house, ensure you are Category A, otherwise you will be like us and pay more then you should with no reimbursement.
