CHEERLEADING: Weeks of preparation, hours spent travelling and doing hair and make-up for two minutes and 30 seconds on stage.

That's all the time the Emerald Cheerleading Squad had to impress the judges at the Aussie Gold International Championship.

The team of 10 competed in the Senior All Girl Level 2, up against 16 other teams with impressive skills.

"The score margin was only minimal throughout, with difficulty, quality and creativity being decisive factors to determine the final result,” coach Susi Mick said.

"The Emerald Gymnastics and Trampoline Club Diamonds placed ninth and therefore achieved their goal to place in the top 10.

"Being up against bigger teams from Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, New South Wales and Tasmania was definitely a challenge but the team from Emerald proved their spot amongst them.

"We are proud to say, even though coming from a small town, we can achieve big results.”

The championships were held at the Gold Coast Convention Centre which was home to a total of 65 clubs that competed in cheer and dance at the three-day event.

Mick said the weeks of training, plus the time spent travelling to compete in order to perform their routine, was all worth the experience.

The senior cheer team will hit the competition floor again in November in Rockhampton.

Until then the Diamonds will perform together with the junior cheer team Rubies at local events such as the Relay for Life.

"Cheerleading in Emerald is only four years young and still has potential to grow,” Mick said.

Girls aged between nine and 17 can come for a free trial on Monday, July 17, at 6.30pm at the Emerald Gymnastics Club.
