Cheese in pants to pay for drugs
A WOMAN caught shop-lifting food to swap for drugs avoided a jail term despite appearing in court for the same offence months earlier.
Ipswich Magistrate Court heard that on June 5 Elyse Lea Rutherford placed a large pack of cheese slices and a 40-pack of freezer bags down the front of her pants.
The 24-year-old then grabbed two bottles of milk before heading to the checkout to buy them at an Ipswich supermarket.
Rutherford was caught in the car park and questioned about the goods in her pants.
The court heard she was a marijuana and cocaine user.
The value of the goods stolen was $27.
The court heard Rutherford was being treated for depression.
Magistrate Donna McCallum fined Rutherford $400 for the offence.
"You really are knocking on the door of a jail sentence," she said.
