Chinese delegation explores our Whitsunday region

OPPORTUNITIES for investment in agriculture, aquaculture and property development were high on the agenda when Whitsunday Regional Council hosted a delegation from China's Yongning County last week.

Mayor Jennifer Whitney said the delegation were able to witness the region's fantastic tourism experiences firsthand, via a helicopter flight over the reef and Whitehaven beach and a lunch at Hayman Island.

"They also received a briefing from Council on planning and development in the region, along with a briefing from Whitsundays Marketing and Development Economic Development Manager Denise Kremyborg on the horticulture and aquaculture within the region," she said. "As part of this a box of local produce was provided to the delegation which was eaten as part of their meals during their stay." Cr Whitney said the delegation was particularly interested in beef exports and establishing a joint website creating "tourism links". She described the visit as "very beneficial" and said that Chinese investment would create jobs and continue to improve the status of the region. "We have developed a very good relationship and they're very keen to invest," she said.
