WHILE swimmers and recreational users of Pumicestone Passage will have to wait for the all-clear to re-enter Golden Beach, residents have slammed yesterday's spill.

John Maloney was among those at the site early yesterday confronted with the pungent smells from the basin, a result of a sewage spill that sent effluent into the Passage.

"It's just a disgrace," he said.

"It (the basin) should never have been built."

While the Sunshine Coast Council said the basin may have in fact saved the Passage from further pollution, many residents were questioning why the project had proceeded, and feared the basin posed health risks.

Shadow Health Minister and Caloundra MP Mark McArdle joined the chorus of criticism for the basin following the incident, agreeing there were serious concerns over mosquito breeding and the proximity to a playground.
