Christensen in support of banking sector inquiry

MEMBER for Dawson George Christensen said on Monday he would continue to support an inquiry into the banking sector.

There is growing support for a commission of inquiry into reports of unfair treatment of borrowers and dishonest dealings by Australia's lenders, including support from the Greens and long-time banking probe supporter Kennedy MP Bob Katter.

"Something will be introduced in the parliament in the next few months. If not this month, it will be in May,” Mr Christensen said, adding "I will support it.”

Mr Christensen said he felt a responsibility to the people of his electorate to uphold and deliver fair and reasonable terms for borrowers.

"I have had farmers from Proserpine, Bowen and the Burdekin that have told me about situations where they have been able to get out of debt and the bank wound them up and made it very difficult for them,” he said.

"There have been allegations that the banks have committed criminal acts when repossessing property.”

Mr Christensen said he was aware of the plight of Proserpine publican Thomas Dunne, suggesting he try alternatives to traditional lenders.

"He could consider shopping about. Having spoken to other business in similar situations they have found their problems have been sorted out by doing business (with a bank) that is more understanding of business operating in regional areas,” he said.
