Christensen on ag committee

MEMBER for Dawson George Christensen has been nominated to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Agriculture, Resources, Fisheries and Forestry.

The multi-party committee advises Parliament and Government on matters relating to farming, the mining industry and the fishing sector which are all major industries within the Dawson electorate.

Mr Christensen said he looked forward to giving a voice to local farmers, fishermen and mineworkers on the committee.

“This committee lines up with some of the key industries in the Dawson electorate,” he said.

“I am very keen to be a voice for local farmers, fishermen and mineworkers on this committee.

“We have serious issues to tackle.

“The impact of the proposed mining tax and carbon tax on jobs in the mining industry is one, as is how we can sustain fishing while the extreme Greens push for closures of vast tracts of the Coral Sea.

“With farming, I would be interested in investigating the impact of the draconian reef regulations on cane growers and graziers.”

The committee often conducts public inquiries on key issues before reporting back to Parliament and the Government.

Under previous terms of Parliament, the committee had advised the Government on a variety of matters including rural and regional skilling and training, water rights for farmers and infrastructure needs of Australia's regional areas.
